A Code First Girls origin story
I studied Computer Science at Babcock University in Nigeria. Through that, I got involved with Code Fist Girls, which gave me the confidence to put my skills into practice and explore opportunities in data and technology. That led to Lloyds Banking Group sponsoring me to complete an MSc in Advanced Computer Science with Data Analytics at the University of Leeds. The Data & AI graduate scheme was the ideal next step, as it would stretch me across data engineering, data science and analytics.
A new problem to solve every day
As a Data Engineer, my day involves building or improving data pipelines, checking data quality, and making sure that people have access to the right information. There’s always a new problem to solve, a person to learn from, or a chance to build stronger relationships with the team. In my first placement, I was involved in building fraud model performance dashboards for Economic Crime Prevention. It helped show how data can be used in a very real and practical way to protect customers, especially vulnerable customers, from fraud. I found it meaningful because the work was technical, but the impact was very human.
What I’ve learned
Data work is not just sitting behind a screen; it is about asking the right questions, translating complex information and making sure the insight actually helps someone. Across my placements, I’ve been able to build technical skills in areas like dashboards, modelling, analytics and data engineering, but I’ve also learnt the importance of storytelling and stakeholder engagement. Alongside my placements, I’ve had dedicated study time and access to opportunities like Stanford Online qualifications, Google certifications, Data Summer School virtual classes, Coursera courses and more. I think the biggest lesson has been that growth often comes from saying yes before you feel fully ready. This is a place where data, people, and purpose come together.
Emboldened by the BOLD Network
Ours is a supportive, people-focused working environment. The graduate community gets to connect through Workplace Experience events and colleague networks. I’m part of the BOLD Network, which is a Black heritage colleague network focused on leadership, development and community. I had the privilege of helping to launch the West Yorkshire hub, creating a stronger sense of community in the North and supporting colleagues’ career progression and wellbeing. It’s been such a brilliant, meaningful experience.
