Reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process
Q. What are ‘Reasonable Adjustments’ and why are they available?
A. We want to ensure that all candidates are able to compete on an equal basis.
People with long term health conditions and/or disabilities might face barriers or challenges with certain aspects of our selection process which will prevent them being able to give their best and compete on an equal basis with candidates who are not disabled. The result is that we will risk needlessly excluding or filtering out valuable talent from our organisation.
Q. What kind of adjustments can be made?
A. Adjustments vary greatly depending on the specific needs or circumstances of the individual. However, they generally fall into the following groups:
• Modifying the approach taken during selection, e.g. providing more time to take tests, allowing additional preparation time, permitting written evidence as well as verbal during a competency interview.
• Considerations / adaptations to the physical environment, e.g. the venue location, the accessibility of the venue, lighting, ambient sound.
• Providing alternative format materials (letters, test materials, etc.), e.g. large print, Braille, audio.
• Accommodating support workers, e.g. sign language interpreters, carers, assistance dogs.
• Understanding and accommodating specific communication needs, e.g. lip reading.
• Recognising and accommodating ‘different’ behaviours, e.g. someone with autism might avoid eye contact.

The Guaranteed Interview Scheme
Q: What is the Guaranteed Interview Scheme?
A: The Guaranteed Interview Scheme allows disabled candidates the opportunity to have a guaranteed interview provided they meet the minimum criteria for the role.
Q: What in reality does the Guaranteed Interview Scheme mean for Emerging Talent Recruitment?
A: The recruitment process for our Emerging Talent Programmes includes more stages than just interviewing candidates, due to the volume of applications we receive. As such we can only guarantee that disabled candidates will be invited to take our online tests stage. Whilst this does not align with the name of the national scheme, it still means that disabled candidates are progressed an additional step through the process, where many candidates will get declined.
Q: If I have a disability do I have to tick the Guaranteed Interview Scheme box?
A: Not at all. If you are a disabled candidate and wish to tick the box to secure the benefits of the guaranteed interview scheme, then you are very welcome. Equally if you would prefer not to then this is also fine and you will still be entitled to receive reasonable adjustments throughout the process, if your application is proceeded with. Disclosure of a disability is never mandatory, but we would encourage you to do so in order to be able to make reasonable adjustments for you and to give you the best opportunity to demonstrate your skills and abilities.
